Nokia offers free music downloads

Nokia will launch a new service next year that allows people who buy certain Nokia phones to download music for free for a year after they purchase the device.
The company has signed a worldwide deal with Universal Music to offer the service and is in talks with other major labels, said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia's president and CEO, in a speech at the Nokia World conference in Amsterdam.
The service, called Comes with Music, will allow people to download as many songs as they want during the year after they buy the phone, and then keep the music after the year is up, Kallasvuo said.

Nokia offers Microsoft email on smartphones

Nokia, the world's No. 1 cell phone maker, announced Wednesday that it made a deal with Microsoft to enable Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on 80 million Nokia phones.

Microsoft ActiveSync allows employees with Nokia phones equipped with the latest edition of S60 software to access their e-mail, contacts, calendar, company directory and other information through their mobile phones.

This makes Nokia more competitive with Canada's Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the popular BlackBerry handsets.

Nokia Tube coming soon...

Nokia is releasing its first ever full touchscreen phone, the Nokia Tube which has been seen in The Dark Knight movie.
Is it an iPhone killer? I don't think so. Because Nokia has said it won’t come with the same multitouch technology you find in the iPhone. Instead, we will see the Symbian S60 Touch system just like in the LG and Samsung.

Nokia N96 versus iPhone 3G

  • User Interface:
iPhone and its revolutionary multi-touch technology is far ahead of Nokia N96. In addition, the iPhone includes a 3.5-inch screen, whereas the N96 comes with a 2.8-inch one.
  • Camera:
N96 is a winner with 5 megapixels and a LED flash. iPhone has only 2 megapixels and no flash. The N96 also comes with an additional VGA camera on its face for making video calls.
  • Size:
Even though N96 is lighter than iPhone, it looks bulkier. Also, iPhone is thinner compared to N96. When it comes to design, iPhone is the winner.
  • Multimedia:
N96 is a clear winner here as it can play MP3s, AACs WMAs. It also allows users to drag and drop files from their system. If you have an iPhone, you have to deal with iTunes and this can be frustrating many times.
  • Battery:
    iPhone is a winner here.
For Audio playback 14 hours (N96) vs. 24 hours (iPhone)
For Video playback 5 hours (N96) vs. 7 hours (iPhone)
Standby time 220 hours (N96) vs. 300 hours (iPhone).
  • WebApps:
The iPhone has the App Store for third-party applications, while the N96 has the collection of applications made for the Symbian S60. To me, there is no winner in this category.

N96 versus N95

  • 2.8 inch display versus 2.6" display for original N95

  • 16GB of integrated memory as opposed to 8GB for N95

  • Camera flash is a dual-LED in the N96 while it is only a single LED in the N95

  • Longer music playback time (14 hrs) and video playback time (5 hrs)

  • Windows Media WMV9 video codec is added

  • Location tagging (geotagging) of pictures, using the integrated GPS

  • Mobile TV receiver is built into N96

  • N96 is a dual-band HSDPA while N95 was a single band

  • No need to open the slide for optimal GPS reception

  • No infra-red port on N96
